VILLAGE OF BERKELEY RESIDENTIAL
SOLID WASTE COLLECTION PROGRAM
Effective the week of March 31, 2003 (starting April 3, 2003), refuse removal, recycling and yard waste will be picked up for the entire Village on Thursdays by the Roy Strom Co. If your normal pick-up day was Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday, you will now put your refuse, recycling and yard waste on the curb for Thursday pick-up. If a holiday falls on a week-day, refuse, recycling and yard waste will be picked up on Friday.
Brush pick-up will continue to be picked up every other Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) from April through November. Public Works will chip unbundled branches that are larger than four inches in diameter and longer than 4 feet (see brush chipping schedule below). No grass, leaves or smaller brush will be picked up on Mondays. Please save that type of debris for disposal on Thursday with your household refuse and recycling.
Smaller branches (less than 4 inches in diameter and less than 4 feet long) must be securely tied in bundles that will be picked up on Thursday with leaves and grass clippings.
Moving to a one day a week pick-up schedule for the entire Village will not change the very high level of service that Village residents enjoy. The new three year Contract with Roy Strom continues to provide for unlimited refuse disposal service and will result in no refuse fee increase this year. Other benefits of a single day pickup will be less traffic congestion, less trucks on residential streets throughout the week, and an improvement to the overall aesthetics of the Village by not having refuse at the curb every day.
The Village of Berkeley and Roy Strom have introduced a new collection operation for refuse and recyclables. Previously, the Village used two separate trucks – one for refuse and one for recyclables. Strom’s new collection operation utilizes two-compartment, rear-loading trucks to collect regular refuse as well as recyclables. Advantages of the new collection service include:
- Reduced traffic congestion
- Reduced wear and tear on road surfaces
- Lower vehicle emissions
All refuse shall be placed in acceptable containers except for items too bulky to fit. An acceptable container shall be of a standard waterproof construction durable metal or plastic material, with a tight fitting cover and handles suitable for lifting. Such containers must be between 10 and 33 gallons in capacity and must not weigh more than 50 pounds. One large, non hazardous, bulk item that can be handled by two individuals or one (1) yard of loose building materials weighing less than 50 pounds, will be allowed per household per week as a part of weekly service.
No refuse is to be placed on the parkway prior to six p.m. on the day before the regularly scheduled pick up day (Municipal Code 8.08.040).
Each single-family residence will receive a recycling bin. Residents can discard the following material into the recycling bin for pick up every Thursday:
#1 PETE, #2
HDPE, #3 PVC, #4 LDPE,
#5 PP Grocery, #7 Plastic Resin Grocery
*Hazardous Chemicals and motor oil not accepted
The following items are not accepted as a part of weekly service and require a special pick up at an additional fee:
- More than one (1) yard of Construction Debris, or debris weighing more than 50 pounds (cabinets, fixtures, doors, windows, lumber, steel, concrete, bricks and stones)
- White Goods (major appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers and hot water heaters)
- Carpeting
- More than one large item (couches, beds, tables, etc) in one pick up
Special pick up information can be provided by calling the Roy Strom Co. at 708-344-5000.
Holidays that fall on a week-day will be picked up on Friday. Holidays observed by the CONTRACTOR are as follows:
New Years Day Memorial Day Independence Day
Labor Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Day
Christmas trees will be collected from the parkway beginning the first day after Christmas through the end of January as a part of weekly service.
Leaves and grass clippings must be bagged in 20 to 32 gallon disposable paper bags (no plastic allowed) or placed in garbage cans without bags, not to exceed 50 pounds. Grass and leaves cannot be raked or blown into the parkway or street. Bundled and tied branch clippings will also be collected every Thursday. Branches for pick up on Thursday should not exceed 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length. The Berkeley Public Works Department will pick up and chip larger branches every other Monday.
Public Works will pick up and chip large branches as necessary as a result of storm damage or by routine yard clean up that are unbundled and exceed 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length every other Monday. Do not place brush in the street.
The schedule for 2006 Brush Chipping will be:
East Side of Taft Ave– Starting April 7 and then every other Monday thru November
West Side of Taft Ave–Starting April 14 and then every other Monday thru November
Wood chips are available to residents by calling the Village Hall at 449-8840.
Berkeley residents currently pay just $13.39/month for unlimited refuse, recycling, brush pickup and yard waste pick up. This translates to an average of $3.35 per week and is reflected on your monthly water bill. No other stickers or bag charges are required.
Thank you for keeping Berkeley Beautiful!
