Berkeley saw a 7.7% decrease in crime between
2004 and 2005, largely due to drops in robberies, aggravated assults
and burglaries. There was an increase in the amount of motor
vehicle thefts reported, although some of those actually turned out
to be family matters where no charges were pressed. "I credit the
residents of the Village of Berkeley for taking a no-tolerance
approach to crime and the fine men and women of the Berkeley Police
Department for working every day to keep Berkeley a safe, quiet
place to live", said President Michael Esposito.

Two Berkeley Police Officers and one 911
Dispatcher were commended by the Village Board on December 6 for
awakening the inhabitants of a house fire that was noticed upon
routine patrol on November 17, 2005. All three sleeping and unaware
inhabitants in the home were rescued from the home safely. Officer
Timothy Chapman is commended for noticing flames on the roof of the
residence as is Officer Robert Anzaldi for assisting with evacuating
the residents. 911 Dispatcher Michael Fluker is commended for
professionally coordinating with multi-jurisdictional fire
department personnel during the incident. "It is with great
pleasure that I commend these individuals for their life saving
actions. Their performance serves as an example of the quality work
public safety officials provide with little regard for their own
safety," said Police Chief Timothy Griffin.

Disabled or Damaged Vehicles |
|
|
Village Zoning ordinance #17.03.140 states that the open storage of junk, refuse, scrap, disabled or damaged vehicle whether awaiting repair or not or motor vehicles without current license plate is prohibited in all zoning districts. There are a few options that you have in order to comply with this ordinance. 1. Purchase new license plates or an updated license plate sticker provided that the vehicle is in running condition. 2. Move the vehicle into a garage. 3. Remove the vehicle from your property. There are several charitable organizations that will remove the vehicle from your property and allow you to get a deduction on your income tax. It is important that we work together to keep Berkeley a safe and beautiful place to live. We hope that you will take action on this matter within the next 30 days. If I can be of any assistance to you please do not hesitate to contact me. Respectfully, |
