Memorial Day Parade 2000

SPECIAL NOTICE
Please support our 17th Annual Pancake Breakfast and Raffle. Our funds have been depleted as a result of low earnings on our bank C-D and rising expenses. We missed the income because there was no Spring fund raiser the previous year. There must be an increase in revenue. Our various programs might be cut back.
Our membership goal is 100 . We must recruit new veterans to our ranks.
YOUR DUES ARE DUE!

ADJUTANTS REPORT
COMMANDER REPORT
Thanks to all who attended the last meeting. We are at 61% for the coming year. Thanks for your early membership dues. We are on track for 100%. At the last meeting, I neglected to cover the 90th State Convention that Bill Morrison and I attended. I will report this at the September meeting. The 17th Pancake Breakfast will be on September 7th from 7 AM till 1 PM. I would hope to see our Post well represented. The Troop 73 Scouts are taking on this community service project and will be doing the lion’s share of the work. Our Auxiliary will have the 50/50 raffle. On a personal note, the last month was taken up with planning my son Shaun’s Eagle Court of Honor which compares to planning a wedding. I am very proud of my son, Shaun.
JOHN ASARORemember to fly your Flag on V-J Day, September 2; Labor Day, September 3; and Patriot Day, September 11.
We have started Berkeley Post’s new year. I sure hope everyone comes out to support our first event, Berkeley Post 17th Annual Pancake Breakfast. The grills and pancake batter dispensers have been reserved and will be delivered. Tickets have been sent out to all post members. The Auxiliary will conduct a Prize Raffle. We need the funds that will be raised from this effort. Boy Scouts from our Troop 73 will be doing most of the labor for this event. There will be a sign on the fence of the Old Settlers Cemetery advertising the Pancake Breakfast. We bought the changeable add-on sign so we could use it for other affairs. All of the local churches received notices about the breakfast. It will be printed in the St. Domitilla Church bulletin. Let us hope we can recruit new members at this affair.
We did well at the Berkeley Village Picnic. A big THANK YOU to those Post and Auxiliary members who helped out. We sold only three barrels. Our supplier raised the price by $3 a barrel and the case of cups was up $4. We set the price per cup at $3.50 and 3 for $10. We bought the cups somewhere else. The liability insurance also went up.
Our costs have gone up but the revenue to support our programs has gone down. Our income from dues has dropped because membership has declined this past year from 104 to 100. We lost 5 members to Post Everlasting. Those members must be replaced. The previous year was also a drop. Most of them were WWII vets. There are many Vietnam vets in Berkeley who have never been asked to join The American Legion. Ask them now! The most frequent answer from these vets is, “I have never been asked”. We have given BLUE STAR SERVICE FLAGS to several families in Berkeley who have sons or daughters in the military service right now. We have also given a free years membership to several in the past three years. Getting them to renew has been difficult. More drop than renew. We only have about 10 members at the Post Meetings, but they seem to be the same people. We need members to start coming around in support of our activities. Our paid membership now stands at 61 with 19 PUFLs. This translates to 61.6%. You can also become a Paid Up For Life member. Your dues are always paid up. If you are interested, call me at the number on top of this letter. If we should reach 100% members by November 11, the Department will give us a cash award of $100 or $1 per member. If we reach 100% by December 30, the Department will give us $50. Almost 2/3 of our members are paid up already. Those who have not submitted their dues, please send it to our P.O. Box 714, Hillside, IL 60163. Commander John Asaro is looking at several vets who are Berkeley policemen as possible members.
Berkeley Post 1016 will be hosting the 5th District Meeting this month at the Village Hall. Please attend to show our guests Berkeley hospitality. Please give our Post Commander John your support. We are the only community service organization in Berkeley. Please attend the 17th Annual Pancake Breakfast on September 7th at the Fire Station. There will be a 50-50 Raffle.
Commander John Asaro and Sr. Vice Commander Detrall Collins will start calling members who have not paid their 2009 dues of $30. We will have an Installation of Officers Ceremony at the September 12th meeting.Flu vaccine is now available at no cost to all veterans at Hines Veterans Hospital.
Ask your veteran friends and neighbors to join our Post and Continue to Serve America.
